CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: NON-NORMATIVE SEXUALITIES IN US LATINX AND LATIN AMERICAN LITERATURE

What is acceptable behavior? Who has the power to label? Have historical attitudes changed? Who gets to decide the norm and enforce it?

Terms such as transgendered, joto, loca, or lo sucio challenge capitalism as sex no longer results in the production of citizens to uphold a capitalist society. Members of the LGBTQ+ community and the terms used to label them by the establishment exist to contain and control behavior historically considered dangerous for civilization.

For this edited collection, we invite papers that, through theoretical analysis, delve into how the portrayal of non-normative sexualities in US Latinx and Latin American Literature resist, contest and subvert traditional societal norms. There is particular interest in essays that address 2-3 works by one author or that compare and contrast 2-3 works of different authors. Also attractive would be an examination of how the author employs non-normative sexualities in relation to capitalism.

Topics may include but not be limited to the following themes:

  • Subverting the norm
  • Rejection or roles
  • Theoretical approaches that question the role of normativity
  • Interrogation of the status quo
  • The relationship between sexuality and space
  • Non-normative desire
  • Gender as performance
  • Caribbean versus continental sexualities
  • Historical novels and re-imaginings
  • Historical repetitions

Scholarly submissions should be between 25-30 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font and should follow the MLA Style Manual. Please use End Notes rather than Footnotes and place page numbers in the upper right-hand corner.

Original, unpublished submissions in Microsoft Word (PC compatible format) should be sent electronically to both co-editors: Kathryn Quinn-Sánchez at [email protected] and Michele Shaul at [email protected]  Please put the phrase “Non-normative Sexualities” in the subject line.

Scholarly articles under consideration should not be submitted elsewhere.

Deadline for Submission: August 31, 2021.
